Back in the day the CHP drove Mustang LX 5.0 pursuit vehicles. Everyone knew what they were and you just got out of the way when you saw one approach. A friend and his dad both worked for Ford Aerospace and could get lease cars dirt cheap. One of the best ones was Mustang LX 5.0 notch 5-speed , just like the CHP drove. It was painted in dark blue and was easily mistaken for a CHP vehicle. Driving down the freeways was great - we could pretty much drive any speed we wanted and people would clear out of our way, clearing the roads like a snow plow...

I loved seeing the mustang as a CHP car, they looked great. I also heard that while they were quick for pursuits they were ill suited for continuous operation and had lots of mechanical problems.

About 15 years ago CHP put out bids for test cars and volvo being partially owned by ford threw something at the wall. I guess they really liked the cars but didn’t like the complexity and extended maintenance costs.
